children's book illustrations

Last week I borrowed a lovely book from the library, 'The Golden Age of Children's Book Illustration' by Richard Dalby. I love children's books, especially the pen and ink sketchy drawings found in vintage Enid Blytons and of course Mabel Lucie Attwell.

I also liked these others,

Randolph Caldecott

Jessie Willcox Smith

Cecil Aldin

Louis Wain

Mabel Lucie Attwell

Anne Anderson

Margaret Tarrant

and finally E. H. Shepard. I love the colours, the flowers the make believe and enchantment in each little scene. Which are your favourites?

They are lovely........so whimsical, and take me right back to my childhood, I have a cross stitch book of Mabel Lucie Attwell patterns, which I'm always browsing through.

Milly Molly Mandy was always my favourite! I loved the stories as a child, my daughter (now 22) also loved them and we still have the books!
I just loved the little map at the front of the book showing where she lived, I always wanted to live there too!

I love them all, there is something enchanting about them, they draw you in and give you a special feeling, I think we all need to get back to this softness and away from the abrasive feel of the modern world.

So many children's book illustrations are worth framing. My particular love is Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone. It started with a Dean's Book of Prayers that I got as a child and I have since collected their book of Fairy tales and nursery rhymes too. They also illustrated Enid Blyton's The Enchanted Wood.

Love the books I have bought some 1930's (i think) books recently and the initials on the drawings are EWB surrounded by a rectangle - do you know who this is? I have googled but without success. I haven't done a post about them yet but hope to do so shortly.
